Amoxicillin, available in liquid and tablet forms, helps to destroy the growth of bacteria and is registered for use in humans and animals including dogs. Amoxicillin for dogs is an antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin group. It comes under different brand names including Amoxil, Polymox, Trimox, Biomox, and Robamox-BV. Amoxicillin is used to treat different kinds of bacterial infections associated with dogs such as pneumonia, bladder infections, ear infections, skin infections, tooth abscess, gonnorhea, streptococci and E.coli.

Side effects of Amoxicillin in dogs


 Common side of Amoxicillin in dogs may include nausea, diarrhea, vomitting, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. If any of these symptoms persist, call your doctor right away. Below you will find some of the allergic reaction and serious side effects of Amoxicillin in dogs

Serious side effects of Amoxicillin in dogs:

  • Seizures
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Hives
  • Blood in stools

 
Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions in dogs may include, rashes, fever, swelling of the face or legs, rapid heartbeat and difficulty in breathing.

Dosage: Dosage of Amoxicillin depends on the size, age and weight. The usual dose of amoxicillin in dogs and cats is 5-10mg/pound every 12-24 hours.  It is available in various size tablets (50 to 500mg) and also comes in liquid suspensions. You can give Amoxicillin with or without food.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Amoxicillin, give it as soon as possible. If it is time for the next dose,then skip the missed dose and resume your dog normal dosing schedule. Do not give two doses at once.

You should not give Amoxicillin if dog is allergic to penicillin.

How to store Amoxicillin: Store tablets and capsules at room temperatures and liquid suspension in the refrigerator. Discard the unused suspension after 14 days.
