 Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that belongs to the pencillin class. For children, it is used to treat different kinds of bacterial infections including ear infections, skin infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. It will not work for cold, flu or other viral infections. Amoxicillin is available under various brand names including Amoxil, Polymox, Wymox, and Trimox. You can get Amoxicillin as capsules, tablets, chewable tablets, and
powder for oral suspension.

Side effects of Amoxicillin in children:

Common side effects of Amoxicillin in children may include diarrhea, nausea, hyperactivity, vomitting, changes in behaviour, anxiety and tooth discoloration. Call your pediatrician if any of the symptoms occurs. Below you will find some serious side effects and allergic reactions of Amoxicillin.

Serious side effects of Amoxicillin in children:

Dizziness

Confusion

Convulsions

Hives

Insomnia

Liver problems

Jaundice (Yellowing of the eyes, face or skin)


Allergic reactions: Allergic reactions may include bleeding, rashes, itching and easy bruising.

Pencillin is generally considered safe for pregnant women if they are not allergic to pencillin. Tell your doctor first if you are:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Pregnant
  • Planning to get pregnant
  • Allergies
  • Hives
  • Asthma
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Or medical conditions you may have

 

 Dosage of Amoxicillin in children: The dose of Amoxicillin in children will vary according to age, weight, and type of infection and bacteria and your child's tolerance to medications.

A dose of pediatric drops can be added to formula, fruit juice, milk, and water. Ask your doctor first. The mixture should be shaken immediately and completely.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Amoxicillin, give it as soon as possible. If it is time for your next dose,then skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not give two doses at once.
